Better Mental Health for Seniors: Recognizing the Signs and Finding the Right Support

The Journey to Better Mental Health for Seniors

Mental health is just as important as physical health, but for many older adults, it wasn’t something openly discussed in the past. Thankfully, that’s changing. Today, more people understand that mental health challenges like depression or anxiety are common and that it’s absolutely okay to reach out for help.

Talking openly about mental health creates safe, supportive environments—especially for seniors who may be dealing with new life changes, health conditions, or emotional stress.

How to Recognize Depression in Seniors

Depression isn’t just feeling down now and then. It’s a serious, long-lasting condition that can affect how someone feels, thinks, and lives on a day-to-day basis. While some individuals may have struggled with depression throughout life, others may develop it later due to illness, isolation, or the loss of a loved one.

Only a healthcare professional can make a diagnosis, but here are some common signs of depression in older adults to look out for:

If you notice any of these symptoms in a loved one, gently encourage them to speak with their doctor or a licensed mental health provider.

Signs of Anxiety in Seniors

Feeling a little worried from time to time is perfectly normal. But anxiety becomes a concern when those feelings linger or grow over time, especially when they interfere with daily life.

Older adults might worry about their health, finances, or the future. But when those worries start to take over, it may be time to seek support. Here are some common symptoms of anxiety in seniors:

Supportive living environments, like assisted living communities, can help ease anxiety by providing routine, connection, and peace of mind.

Mental Health Support for Seniors: What Treatment Looks Like

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to mental health care. Some seniors benefit from talk therapy, others may need medication, and many find the best results from a mix of both.

Medication can be especially tricky for seniors who may already be taking several prescriptions. That’s where personalized treatment and regular medical care become so important.

A Personalized Approach with IDgenetix

At select Edgewood communities, we’re proud to work with primary care providers who use IDgenetix, a cutting-edge genetic test that helps take the guesswork out of mental health medications.

IDgenetix looks at:

With this information, doctors can choose medications that are more likely to work and less likely to cause side effects. For older adults, that means:

It’s just one of the many ways we’re helping residents feel better, faster, and with more confidence in their care journey.

Emergency Preparedness for Seniors: How to Be Ready Before a Disaster

Senior living residents standing near a supply of food

Are You Ready for an Emergency?

At Edgewood, we have emergency preparedness plans in place to keep residents safe. But if you live in a private home, chances are you don’t have a backup plan—until disaster strikes. And by then, it’s too late, so we wanted to share our helpful tips with seniors, no matter where they call home!

Explore Senior Living Communities Near Me

Mother Nature has kept the staff on their toes at Edgewood’s memory care communities in Nebraska this past year! After a torrential downpour, our Nebraska Regional Vice President, Amy Brinley, spotted something unexpected in a flooded parking lot—a fish. A real, actual fish. And no, there’s no lake or river close by. We’re still trying to figure that one out.

But that wasn’t the only weather surprise. Four of our Nebraska communities—Omaha, Fremont, Grand Island, and Columbus—lost power in the past month due to severe winter storms. Some ran on backup generators for several hours while electricians worked tirelessly to restore power.

Our team always goes the extra mile (sometimes literally). One dedicated staff member at an Edgewood community in the Dakotas even took a snowmobile to work when dangerous road conditions shut everything down!

We’re beyond grateful for our incredible teams, who make sure residents are safe and comfortable, no matter what the weather throws their way. But these wild weather moments raise an important question for other seniors living in private settings: Are you prepared if disaster strikes?

Why Plan for the Unexpected?

Emergencies don’t wait for a convenient time. Natural disasters happen year-round, whether it’s flooding, wildfires, blizzards, or power outages. And with summer right around the corner, now is the perfect time to get your emergency plan in place.

Plus, the sooner you prep, the sooner you can kick back and enjoy those lake days and backyard BBQs—don’t forget an emergency kit for the cabin, too!

What to Keep in Your Emergency Kit

No need to go full doomsday prepper, but having the basics on hand can make a huge difference. If disaster strikes, there’s no telling how long it’ll take for power to return or for stores to restock essentials.

(Your list may vary based on your needs—if you rely on oxygen or skilled healthcare, consider a backup care plan, like a short-term stay at a senior community.)

Other Important Items

Where to Store Your Emergency Kit

Anyone who’s seen The Wizard of Oz knows that tornadoes have a way of misplacing things. Store your emergency kit in a spot that’s safe and easy to grab, like:

Whatever you do, make sure everyone in your household knows where the kit is—and check it occasionally to replace expired items. Oh, and remind the family that the emergency granola bars are for actual emergencies, not snack attacks.

More Than a Meal: Helping Seniors Eat Well & Stay Happy

Mealtime is more than just eating—it’s an experience, a time for connection, and a source of comfort. Think about how holiday meals bring families together, filling the room with warmth, laughter, and shared stories. Now, imagine sitting down to eat alone. Unfortunately, this is a daily reality for many seniors, and it can significantly impact their appetites, physical health, and emotional well-being.

Cooking for one, eating alone, and other common challenges can lead to poor nutrition and unintended weight loss. In this blog article, we’ll explore the barriers seniors face to healthy eating and practical solutions to help them overcome common nutritional challenges to maintain a balanced diet.

Common Barriers to Senior Nutrition

Many factors can make it difficult for seniors to prepare and eat nutritious meals, including:

While many solutions, from home care services to home-delivered meals, can help seniors eat properly at home, loneliness may still impact their appetites. Sharing a meal in the dining room with friends or loved ones can help improve the entire experience.

At Edgewood, we believe that mealtime should be an enjoyable and stress-free social experience. That’s why we embrace a liberalized approach to dining, offering a variety of delicious options that align with residents’ preferences and dietary needs. We also encourage residents to gather together around the table.

Personal choice is key when it comes to food. We prioritize choice. Research supports that a liberalized diet—rather than a restrictive one—can improve overall quality of life.

Benefits of a Liberalized Diet for Seniors

We also offer detailed nutritional information for our meals, empowering residents and their families to make informed decisions alongside healthcare providers. If a resident has a dietary recommendation from their doctor, they can discuss which menu items they should select to support those goals.

Our Commitment to Senior Nutrition

Edgewood’s approach to dining aligns with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics‘ recommendations:

“Malnutrition, weight loss, poor food intake, and food satisfaction are serious concerns for older adults. Given that many seniors have different therapeutic targets for blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol than younger adults, a regular or liberalized diet is often the best choice. Individualizing nutrition and offering meal choices improves both health and quality of life.”

By offering nutritious, appealing, and flexible meal options, we ensure that seniors receive the care and dignity they deserve—one delicious meal at a time.

It’s a Beautiful Day in Our Neighborhood!

Embracing the Spirit of Mister Rogers

For decades, Mister Rogers inspired generations with his kindness, empathy, and community messages on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. His legacy lives on in childhood memories and real-life communities like Edgewood Village in Bismarck.

Recently, we received a touching story from a resident’s daughter about the profound impact our community has had on their lives. They even compared their experience to the warmth and kindness of Mister Rogers himself.

Nancy Woodmansee, daughter of Edgewood Village resident, Phyllis Flick, shared the profound impact of simple acts of kindness that have helped both her and her mom acclimate to their new neighborhood.

Here’s what Nancy wrote about her mom’s experience:

“It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood, Fred Rodgers said at the beginning of each episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, and in the summer of ’23, my mom was welcomed to this neighborhood of Edgewood with love, kindness, and respect. As she walked by many ‘streets,’ she was greeted by her name and asked how she was doing. Mom was amazed so many people knew her. What a welcoming feeling,” Nancy shared.

Since moving to Edgewood, Phyllis has enjoyed many activities, especially live music and BINGO. She also loves our meals, often saying, “Oh, the food is so good.”

Sometimes, all it takes is one kind word to nourish another person.

—Fred Rogers

Offering Support When You Need It Most

“Kindness, compassion, and laughter have been a part of Mom’s journey as she progressed with her dementia,” Nancy said. She added that the compassionate staff helped guide her through this difficult time.

“They were in constant communication and support with hugs and kind words, and they provided direction as Mom transitioned to memory care. Mom is now in her new neighborhood of memory care, one filled with compassion, kindness, respect, laughter, and plenty of hugs,” Nancy said.

Everyone longs to be loved. The greatest thing we can do is help somebody know that they are loved and capable of loving.

—Fred Rogers

Sharing Gratitude

Nancy expressed her deep appreciation for the experience she and her mom have had at Edgewood Village:

“It is with such a grateful heart that I express my gratitude towards Edgewood and all of its staff. Not only has it become Mom’s new home, but I have been welcomed into it along with her. It is truly a neighborhood where you feel like family.”

We sincerely thank Nancy and Phyllis for being part of our Edgewood community and sharing this thoughtful experience. Your kind and heartfelt words mean the world to us!

Imagine what our real neighbors would be like if each of us offered, as a matter of course, just one kind word to another person.

A Slice of History & A Legacy of Hard Work: Ray’s Story

Ray Peloquin and his daughter, Amy standing in the Kitchen at Dave's Pizza

One of the best parts of senior living is welcoming residents like family and uncovering the incredible stories that make them who they are. Resident Ray Peloquin from Edgewood in Virginia, MN, has a great story to share.

As a local entrepreneur and a tremendously hard worker, Ray helped make Dave’s Pizza a household name in Virginia, Minnesota. From his early days in Big Fork, MN, to running a beloved pizza shop for 50 years, Ray’s journey is a testament to diligence, family values, and a passion for great food.

From Big Fork to Business Owner

Ray grew up in Big Fork, MN, where he worked at a Red Owl store during high school.  After graduating, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served one year in Korea and another in Japan before returning home.

His work at the local Red Owl grocery store during high school paved the way for a successful career in management when he returned from the service. Over the years, Ray managed Red Owl stores in Hibbing, Little Falls, and Virginia. After spending decades in the grocery business, he embarked on a new journey—owning his own restaurant.

The Start of a Dave’s Pizza Legacy

Dave's Pizza Building Exterior

Ray’s transition from grocery management to the pizza business came when Dave Masucci, founder of Dave’s Pizza, approached him about purchasing the Virginia location. At that time, Virginia was one of 13 Dave’s locations in Minnesota (there are just three remaining today).

In 1973, Ray, his wife Della, and their son Mark took a leap of faith and bought Virginia, which was located in the Northgate Plaza. After several years, in 1976, Ray moved Dave’s Pizza to its current location on 2nd Avenue in Virginia, which had previously been home to Garcia’s Pizza. Ray and his wife, Della, lived in an apartment above the restaurant after she remodeled it, making Dave’s truly a family-run operation.

A Family Business Built on Tradition

Tragedy struck when Ray’s son Mark passed away in an accident. Following that difficult time, Ray’s other children, Mike and Amy, stepped in, working alongside him at Dave’s Pizza for 30 years before he retired.

Ray credited much of the restaurant’s success to keeping things exactly the same and preserving the signature flavors customers loved. His only change was switching to a homemade pizza crust, which became a hit.

Everything at Dave’s was crafted from scratch, from the signature pizza sauce to the hand-seasoned sausage. Even the pepperoni was sliced in-house, and the beloved subs were made using fresh bread from Pep’s Bakery.

Dave’s Pizza: A Minnesota Staple

For 50 years, Ray poured his heart into Dave’s. Working 60-hour weeks, he dedicated himself to keeping the restaurant’s legacy alive. In 2016, he sold the business to his grandson Corey and longtime employee Mark Ficas. Even after stepping back from day-to-day operations, Ray remained involved. He helped with bookkeeping and ordering until he moved to Edgewood Healthcare in December 2023. The business changed hands again in December 2023, closing a long chapter of ownership for Ray’s family.

A Pizza Worth Traveling For

Dave’s Pizza was more than a local favorite—it was a destination. Ray recalls a customer from California who, upon visiting Virginia, packed a cooler with 50 frozen Dave’s pizzas to take home and share. This was a common sight, as many former residents and travelers made sure to stock up on Dave’s famous pies. When Ray first took over, they made about 80 frozen pizzas per week—which skyrocketed to 2,000 per week, peaking at 3,000 during the holidays and summertime!

People used to call me the Pizza King, and now everyone here treats me like a king!

—Ray Peloquin

Honoring a Legacy at Edgewood Healthcare

Today, Ray enjoys reflecting on his decades in the pizza business. He also enjoys telling stories and visiting fellow residents and staff at Edgewood Healthcare in Virginia, MN. Ray also taught himself to play the piano, playing beautifully by ear.

Aside from those hobbies, Ray considers himself a news junkie these days, and we’re happy to report that he enjoys the food!

Ray’s journey inspires us with its powerful reminder of the importance of family, tradition, and hard work. Thank you to Ray and your family for helping us share this story!

Come on in, the Water’s Fine: Assisted Living Brings Peace of Mind

Senior female with toes in the water

Life’s transitions have a way of making us uneasy—especially during the later chapters. So, why not get some peace of mind?

We always say, “Check us out, stop in for a tour, or join one of our community events.” We encourage visitors to experience firsthand how different assisted living has become.

Find Senior Living Near Me

The environment, the staff, and the residents in assisted living communities are not the same as they were decades ago. Senior living has come a long way, but you might need to see it firsthand to appreciate it fully.

What’s Included in Assisted Living?

The best part of assisted living, which is not widely advertised in brochures, is the friends you make. Between your neighbors and the staff, Edgewood is all about friendships!

What’s a Typical Day Like?

The best part of a typical day in assisted living is that you can choose what your day looks like! If you like group activities, great; if not, we won’t bug you.

If you’re a late sleeper, you can enjoy your extra rest when you move in with us. You don’t have to follow the daily programming schedule if you prefer to enjoy other pastimes. You can chart your course.

Can I Go Away for the Weekend?

You sure can. Whether you want to spend a night having a sleepover with your grandchildren or you want to fly to Las Vegas for the weekend, you can come and go as you wish.

If you don’t require daily care or assistance during the overnight hours, consider our 55+ or independent living options. These offer apartments and some of the same services as assisted living, such as meal plans and activities. Garages, reserved parking, and on-site healthcare are options for 55+ or independent living apartments.

Can My Family Visit at Any Time?

Families are always welcome to see you! There are even discounted meals for family or friends if they want to join you at mealtime. It’s helpful if they call ahead to let us know they’re coming, but we’re always flexible because Edgewood is your home!

There’s no need to give up on family traditions and celebrations because you’ve downsized into an apartment. If you’d like to have a family event at Edgewood, we have designated places for you to entertain.

Reserving space in advance is important to ensure that spaces are available for all our residents and their loved ones. Birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays are still important and can be celebrated if you move into senior living.

What If I’m Not Sure?

Edgewood offers short-term stays so residents can join us for a week, a month, or a season. Those who opt for a short-term stay get the same services as assisted living residents without signing a formal lease. This is a great option for those with family caring for them and their caregivers who must leave town or be away for a while. If you’re interested, contact us at info@edgewoodhealthcare.com to learn more.

Tell Me About the Good Old Days

Have you ever experienced the smell of freshly baked cookies and been transported right back to your grandmother’s kitchen? Our senses—sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing—play a powerful role in triggering memories. These moments of déjà vu can feel random, but they’re rooted in our sensory experiences. For individuals with dementia, these memory cues can be both grounding and comforting, making them an essential tool in dementia care.

What is Reminiscence Therapy (RT)?

Reminiscence therapy (RT) is a powerful form of psychotherapy designed to support those with dementia by helping them recall happy, calming moments from their past. This therapy often involves conversations inspired by sensory cues such as images, videos, or music. Whether practiced in a group or one-on-one setting, RT encourages storytelling and connection.

By triggering memories, RT can:

RT is typically practiced in a clinical setting with a licensed professional. However, loved ones and staff who assist those with dementia can use props to help jog positive memories and spark meaningful conversations.

At Edgewood Healthcare, we’ve seen firsthand how triggering happy memories can positively impact dementia care. Helping residents feel more at ease in their environment can help reduce episodes of anxiety, wandering, and elopement on difficult days.

Memory Boxes and Life Stations

What Are Memory Boxes?

Memory boxes are personalized collections of meaningful items from a person’s past. They often include:

These tangible items are excellent conversation starters, encouraging individuals to share stories and connect with others. If these keepsakes are valuable, we recommend including photos of their irreplaceable memorabilia instead of the items themselves.

What Are Life Stations?

Life stations are typically available in shared spaces and feature common items that evoke memories. At Edgewood, we’ve incorporated life stations with items like:

These familiar objects help residents recall everyday experiences, fostering a sense of comfort and belonging. Unlike memory boxes, life stations are communal and designed to appeal to all residents.

Sparking Joy Through Music

Playing music is another powerful tool in dementia care. Old songs, CDs, or even music videos can evoke happy memories and encourage storytelling. Whether it’s a favorite tune from childhood or a wedding song, music uniquely connects people to their past.

Reminiscence At Edgewood Healthcare

At Edgewood, we integrate reminiscence into our memory care programs to help residents feel safe, engaged, and understood. Using memory boxes, life stations, and music, we create a nurturing environment where individuals can revisit positive memories and find comfort in their surroundings.

Tips for Caregivers

As a caregiver, you can bring the benefits of reminiscence therapy into your loved one’s daily life. Here are a few tips:

  1. Create a Memory Box: Collect meaningful items from their past and use them to start conversations.
  2. Engage with Life Stations: Introduce familiar objects or activities to help them feel at home.
  3. Incorporate Music: Play songs or albums they love to spark joy and connection.
  4. Be Patient and Creative: Everyone is unique, so experiment with different approaches to see what works.

Reminiscence therapy is more than a tool for managing dementia—it’s a way to bring comfort, connection, and joy to those living with memory loss. At Edgewood Healthcare, we’re dedicated to providing innovative and compassionate care that helps our residents feel truly at home.

By tapping into the power of memories, we create moments of peace and happiness that make a lasting impact. If you’re interested in taking a tour to learn more, email us at info@edgewoodhealthcare.com.
