Imagine coming home from surgery and trying to handle everything on your own. Cooking, cleaning, getting to therapy appointments, and trying your best at healing while winter weather makes a simple walk outside treacherous.
Recovery isn’t just about getting better—it’s about navigating the small, everyday moments that suddenly feel overwhelming: a morning routine that takes twice as long, or a short walk that leaves you exhausted. Between doctor visits, therapy, medications, meals, and rest, it’s easy to feel stretched thin.
While people heal, many people want a little help without giving up their independence. A short-term stay in senior living can provide a cozy place to focus on healing while staying connected to familiar routines—but don’t just take our word for it.

After his left knee replacement, Duane Stradel knew driving to and from therapy during the winter wasn’t going to work. He chose to stay at Edgewood Hawks Point in Dickinson, where therapy and support were close by.
“I like the company,” Duane says. “People are friendly.”
Duane works with Therapy Solutions in Dickinson to rebuild strength and improve movement. His physical therapist wants him to be able to take 13 steps at home, so he is bound and determined to meet that goal.
“I’ve had hip surgery before, but the knee is harder,” Duane explains. “I’m using a walker now, but I want to walk without it.”
Duane plans to stay another month before returning to his condo. While his family helps with errands, he finds that having therapy, meals, and support in one place has made his recovery feel more manageable.
“I would recommend it,” he says. “They do all they can.”
For many people, short-term stays offer helpful support during recovery. This may include on-site therapy, daily meals, help with everyday tasks, opportunities to connect with others, and a safe place to heal—especially during the winter months.
“In the winter, staying home doesn’t always mean help is nearby,” Duane says. “Here, I have everything I need.”
Therapy is Duane’s main focus, but he also enjoys the day-to-day moments that make recovery feel more balanced. He attends music events, watches football games, and talks with others during meals.
“The meals are good,” he says. “There’s plenty of food, and I like food!”
He also appreciates practical help, such as transportation and shopping support, along with the overall cost. “It’s more cost-effective,” Duane shares.
Duane enjoys riding his recumbent bike and looks forward to taking a ride once he’s recovered. Having support close by allows him to heal safely while still feeling like himself.
More Than Just Recovery
Some people choose short-term stays to recover after surgery or illness. Others use them to experience a senior living community for a short time. A stay of a few weeks—or even a season can provide comfort, peace of mind, and endless social opportunities.
During the winter, short-term stays can be especially helpful for those who live alone or rely on family for support. They offer a warm, safe place with meals, activities, and care when it’s needed most.
For Duane, this time has been about healing, building strength, and preparing to return home—one step at a time.
After a lifetime of travel across the U.S. and around the world, Stephen Lech knew his next home needed to feel right. His journey eventually brought him back to Dickinson, North Dakota, where cottage living at Edgewood Hawks Point offered the perfect balance of independence, comfort, and community.
